A female postgraduate trainee doctor was seriously injured in an acid attack at Civil Hospital Quetta, triggering protests by doctors and raising significant concerns about the safety and security of healthcare workers in public hospitals.
How the Incident Unfolded
The attack occurred in the orthopedic ward of Civil Hospital Quetta, the province’s largest government-run healthcare facility. According to authorities, the suspect entered the doctor’s room and threw acid on her before fleeing the scene.
CCTV footage reportedly shows the accused knocking on the door of Dr. Mahnoor Nasir’s room moments before carrying out the attack.
Speaking to the media, Deputy Inspector General of Police Imran Shoukat said that the accused, Hamayoun Shah, was employed as a lift operator at Civil Hospital Quetta. He allegedly waited for Dr. Mahnoor Nasir and attacked her with acid after she entered her room.
Victim’s Condition
According to hospital sources, Dr. Mahnoor Nasir sustained burns to approximately 13 percent of her body. Following the attack, she was initially treated at Sandeman Provincial Hospital in Quetta before being airlifted to Karachi for specialized medical care.
Doctors, including reconstructive surgeons and eye specialists, have completed an initial assessment. The acid caused burn injuries to her face, abdomen, legs, and right hand. She has since been shifted to a Special Care Unit for further treatment.
While her eyes were affected during the attack, medical reports indicate that her eyesight remains intact. Hospital officials have stated that she is out of immediate danger and her condition is stable.
After arriving at a private hospital on University Road in Karachi, Dr. Mahnoor underwent medical examinations and diagnostic tests. Hospital sources said she would receive another detailed assessment after 24 hours and described her overall condition as satisfactory.
What Happened to the Attacker?
Police in Balochistan said the suspect, Hamayoun Shah, was killed during a police operation after allegedly attempting to flee Quetta. According to officials, law enforcement personnel surrounded him, and he was killed in an exchange of fire.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the attack and to uncover any additional circumstances surrounding the incident.
