Spain and Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal has become one of world football’s brightest young stars, with his remarkable rise prompting growing interest in his background and family heritage.
Born in Esplugues de Llobregat, near Barcelona, in July 2007, Yamal is Spanish by nationality but comes from a multicultural family. His father, Mounir Nasraoui, is originally from Morocco, while his mother, Sheila Ebana, has roots in Equatorial Guinea.
The winger was raised in the working-class neighbourhood of Rocafonda in Mataró, Catalonia, where he has frequently spoken about the influence of his upbringing on his career.
Yamal’s family reflects Spain’s increasingly diverse society. His father emigrated from Morocco, while his mother comes from Equatorial Guinea, a Spanish-speaking nation in Central Africa.
The Barcelona academy graduate has often celebrated both sides of his heritage, even displaying the Moroccan and Equatorial Guinean flags alongside references to Rocafonda after major victories.
Lamine Yamal has publicly confirmed that he is a practising Muslim.
The teenager has observed Ramadan while continuing to compete at the highest level and has been seen performing the sajdah (prostration) celebration after scoring goals. The BBC has also described him as a practising Muslim.
In 2026, after anti-Muslim chants were heard during a Spain international match, Yamal responded publicly, writing: “I am Muslim, alhamdulillah,” while condemning the use of religion as a form of abuse in football stadiums.
