WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature designed to protect users from potential scams and fraudulent messages, according to a report by WABetaInfo.
The feature, currently spotted in the beta version of the app, is called “Scam Alert” and aims to provide users with additional warnings when they receive messages from unknown contacts. The alert will appear directly within the chat, allowing users to decide whether to trust, block, or report the sender.
According to the report, the feature will not actively intervene in conversations but will instead analyze potential risks and provide users with relevant information to help them identify suspicious activity.
Importantly, the analysis of messages will reportedly take place on the user’s device itself, ensuring that message content is not sent to WhatsApp’s servers. This approach is intended to maintain end-to-end encryption and user privacy.
The feature will be optional and disabled by default, meaning users will need to manually enable it if they wish to use it. It is also expected to include local activity logs related to scam warnings.
WABetaInfo further noted that WhatsApp is also using similar on-device technology for other features, such as voice message transcription.
As the feature is still in beta testing, there is no confirmed timeline for its public release.
