Messaging platform WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out a new privacy-focused feature that allows messages to disappear immediately after they are read, marking a significant expansion of its disappearing messages tools.
The new timer-based option is designed to give users greater control over their conversations by automatically deleting messages once the recipient has opened and viewed them.
Unlike existing disappearing message settings, which delete messages after a fixed time period, the new feature is triggered by message reading activity.
According to early reports, the feature is being introduced gradually and will be available to select users before a wider global rollout. It is expected to work alongside existing privacy options such as disappearing messages, view-once media, and chat lock settings.
The update reflects WhatsApp’s continued focus on enhancing user privacy and reducing digital footprints in everyday communication.
By allowing messages to vanish after being read, the platform aims to provide users with more flexible control over sensitive or temporary conversations.
However, privacy experts note that while such features increase confidentiality, users should still remain cautious, as screenshots and external backups may still preserve content.
