ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is moving closer to introducing satellite-based internet services as interest from local and international investors in the country’s telecommunications sector continues to grow.
The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) has informed a Senate standing committee that a total of six satellite internet companies have been registered in the country so far.
According to SECP officials, four new companies have completed their registration since the establishment of the Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board (PSARB).
However, the regulator has clarified that registration with the SECP alone does not authorise any company to launch commercial services. Companies must first obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from PSARB before commencing operations.
The briefing also revealed that security clearance for foreign directors and shareholders of several prominent international and local companies, including Starlink, Galaxy Space and Space Cell Pakistan, is still pending with the Ministry of Interior.
The delay in obtaining these clearances has prevented the projects from moving towards their final stages.
Once security clearance is granted by the Ministry of Interior and the required NOC is issued by the regulatory board, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will proceed with issuing the relevant licences.
Only after completing these regulatory requirements will the companies be able to offer satellite internet services to consumers in Pakistan.
The development marks a significant step towards expanding Pakistan’s internet infrastructure through satellite technology, although the launch timeline remains subject to regulatory approvals.
