What should the team do now?

Shahid Shahnawaz by Shahid Shahnawaz
October 16, 2023

Pakistan cricket team lost against the host team India in the World Cup match played in Ahmedabad on October 14. Losing and winning are parts of the game, but Babar’s eleven showed the worst performance in batting, bowling, and fielding.

In the match played on Saturday, the Indian team won the toss and decided to field first. Captain Babar Azam said that if he had won the toss, he would have also decided to field first. Indian captain Rohit Sharma said that the toss does not matter in the Pakistan-India match, but dew has its role in the evening.

Of course, the national team got off to a good batting start, with a 41-run partnership between Imamul Haq and Abdullah Shafiq. Abdullah Shafiq was out on a total score of 41 while Imamul Haq was out on a score of 73.

After the openers, Captain Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan came in and formed a good partnership, however Babar was dismissed for a total score of 155, after which all Pakistani batters failed to score and returned to the pavilion one after the other.

Pakistan’s fourth wicket fell at 162, fifth at 166, sixth at 168, 7th at 171, 8th and 9th at 187 while the tenth fell on a total score of 191. Thus, the whole team scored only 191 runs which was an easy target for India.  Green shirts were expected to score more than 300 but they disappointed the fans.

Pakistan’s performance in bowling was also disappointing. The national players sent only 3 players from India namely Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Captain Rohit Sharma to the pavilion who were dismissed for 23, 79, and 156 respectively.

Rohit Sharma played an innings of 86 runs with the help of 6 fours and 6 sixes, while the highest score among Pakistani players was scored by captain Babar Azam with 50 and Mohammad Rizwan with 49 runs. Imamul Haq scored 36 runs while Abdullah Shafiq scored 20 runs. Overall the performance of the national team in the match can be described as disappointing as the match remained one-sided.

Overall the track record of the national cricket team against India has been excellent, but in the World Cup matches, India has always defeated Pakistan. This was Pakistan’s 8th defeat by India in the World Cup matches, though the nation expected the green shirts to break the winning streak of India, however, the team failed to fulfill the wish of the nation.

However, the World Cup journey is not over. The next matches of the national team are against Australia on October 20 and then against Afghanistan on October 23. Both Australia and Afghanistan have not shown good performance in this World Cup so far.

On the points table, India is currently in the first position after winning 3 out of 3 matches, New Zealand is second, South Africa is third and Pakistan is in fourth position, which means that Pakistan is still in the race for the semi-finals.

What is needed is that the national team, which lost badly against India due to mental pressure or other reasons, should focus on the upcoming matches and perform well to make it to the semi-finals.
