Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, witnessed ongoing violence since Sunday morning, resulting in four deaths. The clashes erupted between local residents and the police over a survey of the Mughal-era Shah Jami Mosque, following a court order.
According to a report by Indian media (News 18) on Monday, over 20 people were injured in the violence, prompting the suspension of internet services and the closure of schools up to the 12th grade in the area.
According to DIG Muniraj of the Moradabad Range, the situation is now under control, with police deployed at key locations. Three deaths were confirmed on Sunday, and a fourth person died in a hospital on Monday. Authorities are taking action against the culprits, and efforts are underway to restore internet services.
The police have detained 21 individuals, including 2 women, as a precautionary measure. Internet services were shut down for 24 hours, and all schools and colleges in the district were ordered to remain closed. A significant police presence has been deployed across the district, with nearby areas also on high alert.
The violence occurred during a survey at the Shah Jami Mosque, which is at the center of a controversial legal dispute. The Hindu side claims that the mosque was built on the site of an ancient temple, while the Muslim side asserts that the mosque was constructed on a mound, with no prior temple at the location.
The victims of the violence have been identified as Naeem and Bilal from Mohalla Kot Garvi and Sariatrin, and Nauman from Hayat Nagar. Details of the fourth deceased have not yet been disclosed. The ongoing legal battle over the mosque’s ownership continues to fuel tensions in the region.
