Residents of Karachi incurred a staggering Rs 850 million in traffic fines due to violations of traffic regulations in 2024.
The traffic police reported that a total of 1.157 million challans were issued throughout the year. The predominant reason for these challans was related to vehicle number plates, accounting for 221,000 challans and fines totaling Rs 119.3 million. Signal violations led to 196,000 challans, resulting in fines of Rs 124.9 million.
Other infractions included overloading, which resulted in 200,000 challans and fines amounting to Rs 103.1 million, as well as no parking violations, with 130,000 challans and fines of Rs 115.7 million. Additionally, one-way and wrong-way violations accounted for 91,000 challans and fines of Rs 20.2 million.
Furthermore, 84,000 challans were issued for failure to wear helmets while riding motorcycles, leading to fines of Rs 42.4 million. Other fines included Rs 53.1 million for the use of fancy number plates, Rs 37.5 million for obstructing traffic flow, and Rs 10.7 million for vehicles lacking speedometers.
Separate reports indicated that nearly 9,000 traffic accidents occurred in Karachi in 2024.
According to rescue services, 771 individuals lost their lives, while 8,174 others sustained injuries in these nearly 9,000 road accidents in Karachi.
