Karachi to experience more severe cold in January, PMD predicts

Karachi and other parts of Pakistan are expected to face even colder weather in the second week of January 2025, as forecasted by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The cold wave currently affecting the country is predicted to intensify during this period.

Sardar Sarfaraz, the chief meteorologist at PMD, has warned that temperatures are likely to drop further. While parts of Balochistan may see light showers between January 3 and 5, the overall forecast suggests a winter season with less snowfall and rainfall compared to previous years.

The cold wave has already made its presence felt in Karachi, with temperatures plunging into single digits on several occasions this month. The chill is not limited to the metropolis; several areas in Balochistan have reported freezing temperatures.

According to PMD, cold and dry weather will dominate most regions of the country, with particularly cold conditions expected in hilly areas during the mornings and nights. The hilly regions of Kashmir and nearby areas may experience partly cloudy weather, accompanied by light rain and snow in the evenings and nighttime.

Additionally, smog is anticipated to persist in isolated plains of Punjab and upper Sindh during the morning and night hours. Frost is also expected in areas such as Islamabad, the Pothohar region, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the early mornings.

Recent temperature reports show Skardu at a chilling -11°C, Astore and Gupis at -8°C, Gilgit at -7°C, and Quetta and Ziarat at -6°C. The PMD’s prediction of more severe cold in January has residents preparing for even colder days ahead.
