In a statement issued on Monday, the VOP said “as veterans who have served our country with honor and distinction, VOP believe that the arrest of an individual based on their political views undermines the very foundations of democracy and the rule of law.”
It said that Lieutenant General (Retd) Amjed Shuaib was a rewarded veteran who had served Pakistan with integrity and character, and had always been a vocal advocate for democracy and human rights in our country.
“We strongly believe that the arrest of Lieutenant General (Retd) Amjed Shuaib is an attempt to silence the Patriotic veterans over Regime Change Operation and stifle dissent in Pakistan. VOP call on the PDM government to respect the fundamental rights of all citizens, including their right to freedom of expression and association. We urge the government to release Lieutenant General (Retd) Amjed Shuaib and other opposition leaders who have been arrested based on their political views,” said the VOP statement.

The VOP further said “we believe that the government must respect the rule of law and due process and ensure that justice is served in a fair and transparent manner. VOP also call on the Pakistan Army to safeguard the wellbeing of Lieutenant General (Retd) Amjed Shuaib while he is in custody. It is the duty of the army to protect its soldiers and ensure that they are not subjected to any mistreatment or mishandling. VOP stand in solidarity with Lieutenant General (Retd) Amjed Shuaib and all those who have been unjustly arrested or persecuted for their political beliefs in Pakistan. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and speak out against any violations of human rights and democratic values.”
