ISLAMABAD: Retired Lt Gen Amjad Shoaib, one of the 26 ex-army officers allowed by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) to appear on media as defence analysts, is reported to have been arrested by the Islamabad police in Monday’s early hours for inciting the public against state institutions.
This came after the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) initiated an inquiry against Lt General (retd) Amjad Shoaib in September last year on charges of leveling baseless accusations against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Reportedly, he was also served a notice in this connection. He had claimed that PM Shehbaz met Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett during his visit to Qatar, what which FIA’s Cybercrimes Wing conducted an inquiry against him regarding the allegations.
However, according to latest reports made available by different media outlets, personnel from the Ramna police station in Islamabad took Amjad Shoaib in their custody from his residence when a First Information Report (FIR) was filed last evening after his television interview.
The FIR, numbered 150, was filed with Magistrate Awais Khan as the complainant.
Police sources have revealed that the FIR was registered under sections 153A and 505 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
According to the FIR, Shuaib incited people to revolt against institutions during his television interview. Currently, he is in police custody at the lockup of the police station. Police will produce before a local court this morning and seek his remand.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Ex-servicemen Society (Sindh) has condemned the arrest of Lt Gen (R) Amjad Shoaib, and demanded of the President, the Chief Justice and the Army Chief to take notice of his arrest.
