WASHINGTON (AFP): The United States has recorded 2,500 deaths related to the coronavirus pandemic over the past 24 hours, taking the tally to 28,554 in the country.
The United States has more than 644,348 people infected with the virus, according to the world meter. So far around 48,708 COVID-19 patients have recovered.
New York’s governor earlier declared that the “worst is over” for the state, despite deaths passing 20,000, as several states began devising a plan to reopen their shattered economies.
Earlier President Donald Trump said that the US is past the worst of the coronavirus pandemic. “It is clear that our aggressive strategy is working,” he told in a news conference.
“The battle continues but the data suggests that nationwide we have passed the peak on new cases.” Trump said by adding, “These encouraging developments have put us in a very strong position to finalize guidelines for states on reopening the country.”
The total number of coronavirus cases in the world has surpassed two million and more than 137,000 people have died, according to data compiled by the Johns Hopkins University. The World Health Organization has warned that lifting curbs too soon could unleash a second wave of cases.
