Today marks a significant day on the global diplomatic front as US and Iranian officials have departed for Muscat, the capital of Oman, to participate in nuclear negotiations.

According to Gulf media, the American delegation includes President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, Special Representative for the Middle East Steve Witkoff, and other high-ranking officials.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei stated that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will represent Iran in the talks scheduled to take place in Muscat this morning.

The presence of these specific officials signals a shift toward a “transactional” and direct style of diplomacy favored by the current US administration.

Jared Kushner & Steve Witkoff

Unlike traditional career diplomats, Kushner and Witkoff bring a “deal-maker” approach. Kushner was a primary architect of the Abraham Accords, while Witkoff, a close confidant of President Trump, has recently been involved in brokering ceasefires in regional conflicts, such as the Israel-Hamas deal in late 2025.

Their involvement suggests that the US is looking for a broad, high-level “grand bargain” rather than just technical nuclear adjustments.

Abbas Araghchi

A veteran diplomat, Araghchi was a lead negotiator for the original 2015 deal. His appointment as Foreign Minister and his presence in Muscat indicate that Iran is fielding its most experienced nuclear expert to safeguard its national interests while seeking relief from the biting economic sanctions that have significantly devalued the Rial.

What is at stake?

Global monitors (IAEA) have expressed concern over Iran’s increased uranium enrichment levels, which are currently significantly higher than the 3.67% limit set in 2015.

The US is pushing for a deal that includes restrictions on Iran’s ballistic missile program and its support for regional proxies, a demand Iran has historically resisted.

For Iran, the primary goal remains the lifting of secondary sanctions to revive its struggling oil-dependent economy and restore access to frozen international assets.
