Joe Kent, Director of the National Counterterrorism Center in the United States, has resigned from his post in opposition to the war against Iran.

In a statement shared on social media, Kent said he could not support the ongoing conflict with Iran on moral grounds.

He claimed that Iran did not pose an immediate threat to the United States and alleged that the war was initiated under pressure from Israel and its influential lobby in the US.

In his resignation letter addressed to President Donald Trump, Kent stated that Israeli officials played a role in drawing the United States into the conflict, adding that a misinformation campaign had been used for this purpose.

He further said that the arguments presented in favour of attacking Iran, along with claims of a swift success, reminded him of the period leading up to the Iraq War.

Kent, who himself served in the Iraq War, noted that his wife, Shannon Kent, was killed during an operation in Syria.

He wrote that, as someone who had served in combat 11 times and lost his wife in a conflict he linked to Israeli actions, he could not support sending a new generation into a war that is not in the interest of the American people and would come at the cost of human lives.
