Israeli belligerence continues against innocent Palestinians even during the last days of the holy month of Ramazan and possibly during Eid festivities as the situation shows no signs of slowing anytime soon. The Palestinians, who are facing Israeli occupation for decades and forced evictions, now have to endure even further hostilities and continuous airstrikes.
At least 32 Palestinians have been killed this week by Israeli forces who have far more sophisticated weapons but are unable to beat their determination. Young Palestinians arrested by Israeli forces smiled as a sign of defiance against the injustices. The recent conflict started when Israeli forces stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque and attacked innocent worshipers. Now the scenes are reminiscent of the 2014 war when Israel bombed the economically blockaded Gaza Strip and attacked civilians. Hamas, who controls the Gaza Strip, have responded with a barrage of rocket attacks overwhelming Israel’s much-touted Iron Dome missile defence system.
What is striking is the muted response of the international community. The US, considered a staunch ally of Israel, has issued a mundane statement calling to ending hostilities. It has also stopped the UN from convening a Security Council emergency meeting on the issue. It must be mentioned that Israel is the biggest donor of the US and lawmakers have vigorously defended the Jewish state. While the reaction of West is anticipated, there has been no strong reaction from the Muslim states either. The failure to unite even on an issue like Palestine is one of the biggest failures of the Muslim Ummah.
Pakistan is one country which has a strong stance on the Palestine conflict. It has categorically refused to recognize Israel even as Gulf nations signed pacts. The towering Palestine Embassy in Islamabad which Pakistan funded is a testament to our relationship. But Pakistan alone cannot resolve the crisis unless there is a unified stance by Muslim countries that should strongly condemn the Israeli belligerence and attack of Palestinians.
The international media, which claims to be the hallmark of free speech and expression, have resorted to distorted reporting and bias which has moulded our perceptions. We need to put forward our own perspective on the issues that matter. It is the need of the hour to have a clear and unified stance so we may defend ourselves against all hostilities and injustices.
