KARACHI: Two people have been arrested for smuggling gutka, manipuri, and other harmful substances in Karachi from Balochistan.
The products are being brought from Hub in Balochistan amid a strict ban on the manufacture and sale of hazardous products in the province.
Hub police Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) Khursheed Hasseb was on routine checking at Lucky Chowrangi when a pickup van going to Karachi was intercepted at a checkpoint.
During inspection, more than 100 bags having 2000 packets weighing over 119 kilograms was founded stashed in hidden compartments under the passenger seats.
Two men namely Muhammad Akram s/o Muhammad Aslam and Aftab Hussain s/o Altaf Hussain who were present in the van were arrested. The suspects supplied gutka from Hub to Lyari’s Ahmed Shah Road.
A case has been lodged agains them at the Moocho police station. Police said further investigation is underway and action will be taken against those involved in the sale of harmful products.
In December 2019, the Sindh Assembly passed the ‘Sindh Prohibition of Preparation, Manufacturing, Storage, Sale and Use of Gutka and Manpuri Bill 2019’, banning the import, export, manufacturing, sale and purchase of gutka, mainpuri and their derivatives in the province.
