The decision to extend summer vacations in Punjab’s educational institutions to three months has been challenged in the Lahore High Court.
The petition argues that the prolonged closure will hugely impact students’ academic progress and seeks to reduce the duration of the holidays to a shorter period.
The petition has been filed by the All Pakistan Private Schools Association. Justice Khalid Ishaq will hear the case tomorrow.
In the petition, the Punjab government, the School Education Department, and others have been named as respondents.
The petitioner argued that the provincial government issued a notification announcing three-month summer holidays, saying that Pakistan’s academic year has now been reduced to only 120 days, whereas countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom have academic years of around 230 days.
The petition further says that closing educational institutions for three months would negatively affect students’ learning. It has requested the court to declare the notification for three-month closures null and void.
The petitioner has also urged the court to order that summer vacations be limited to six to eight weeks instead of three months.
