Russian authorities indicated that this decision is part of a series of restrictions that were initially imposed on WhatsApp and Telegram calls in August.
Russian officials accuse these platforms, including WhatsApp’s parent company Meta, of failing to share necessary information with law enforcement agencies regarding cases of fraud and terrorism.
Roskomnadzor reiterated the accusations, stating that WhatsApp has completely failed to observe regulations designed to combat and prevent crime.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Moscow has no intention of attacking European countries.
