City of lights, Karachi, plays a very vital role in the social, economic and political development of the country. Unfortunately, Karachi faces many difficulties. These have generally come about because of the impacts of massive increase in population, terrorism, increasing rate of urbanization and general government apathy for the city municipal issues.
Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has been suffering from the worst financial crisis in the last 10 years and during the tenure of the former mayor of Karachi, it saw more mismanagement.
Due to the financial crisis of KMC, on the one hand, the city was ruined and on the other hand, KMC employees were deprived of their salaries for many months. Even retired employees are still deprived of their dues.
In such a situation, senior officers awaiting appointments held a meeting to save the institution instead of prioritizing their appointment. Adopting a positive approach, the Karachi Image Restoration Committee held a meeting and presented valuable suggestions to save KMC from the ongoing disaster.
The District Municipal Corporation (DMC) is looking after most of the charged parking area. Therefore, the KMC should hand over the full control of charged parking to DMCs. As a result, recovery will be improved. Meanwhile, bills for municipal utility charges should be sent door to door.
Illegal occupation is also one of the biggest issues of Karachi. Many land grabbers have illegally occupied KMC lands, which is directly affecting the civic entity. These lands should be vacated and rented out on a commercial basis for 10 years.
This civic entity is one of the hubs of corruption. Illegal appointments have also affected the body severely. In this regard, an Advisory Committee consisting of 5 or 6 members Grade 18 and 19 should be formed instead of Senior Director Coordination Administrator/Mayor. The officials who were illegally appointed should be terminated immediately.
Food control and trade license departments should be reopened. These steps will not only benefit the civic entity but also Karachi, which is suffering from major problems. All these suggestions are legitimate, which should be implemented as soon as possible.
