The need for an independent foreign policy

Shahid Shahnawaz by Shahid Shahnawaz
October 16, 2022

The international recognition and stature of every country in the world, including Pakistan, China, India and America, is estimated on the basis of its foreign policy, in which importance is also given to the credibility of those who represent the country.

For example, the country’s political and governmental system in America does not work as it does in Pakistan. There, instead of the Prime Minister, the chief executive of the country is the president. There is two party system in the US, when Democrats come into the power, they adopt their own style of foreign policy and when Republicans gain government, they promote their own kind of foreign policy.

If you still didn’t get it, a very simple example can be given of President Trump and Joe Biden’s style of government and foreign policy. In the era of Donald Trump, Imran Khan met the American President, but the foreign policy adopted by Joe Biden is completely different.

Due to Biden foreign policy, now Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his team are also facing a tough confrontation with a president like Joe Biden who is considered to be more cautious and far more sensitive in foreign affairs than Donald Trump. The statement that came out yesterday can be considered as a great example of this.

Joe Biden, one of the oldest American presidents, said during his address to the Democratic Congressional Committee that Pakistan is probably one of the most dangerous nations in the world, they have nuclear weapons without any cohesion.

President Joe Biden accused Pakistan, saying that its nuclear program is irregular and fears that anyone can use it. The world is changing rapidly. Countries are rethinking alliances. The world is watching us. This is not a joke.

As soon as Biden’s statement came out, there was a reaction from Tehreek-e-Insaf and the coalition government in Pakistan and the statements of PTI Chairman Imran Khan, Energy Minister Khurram Dastgir, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto and other political and government leaders also came out.

Foreign affairs experts can better explain that when a country’s foreign policy moves in one direction, it does not face any fear or anxiety at the global level, whereas Pakistan’s foreign policy in not on one direction because of its economic situation and political leadership.

When Imran Khan was the prime minister, he was on Russia visit when Moscow attacked Ukraine, and it became very difficult for Pakistan to handle this issue at the international level. If it had supported Russia, the US and allies would have become enemies and if it had supported the US, then Russian could have become Pakistan’s enemy.

Fortunately, Pakistan chose the middle path and a position was adopted which was not a reflection of the US or Russian’s stance, rather it was reflection of Pakistan own interests, and today too, Pakistan needs a similar foreign policy.

The current government is of the opinion that Imran Khan sabotaged Pakistan-US relations by making harsh statements against the US and by blaming Washington of conspiring against his government, but we brought back the Pak-US diplomatic relations on track. But Biden statement about Pakistan nuclear program shows that Pak-US relations still have issues.

The reality is that, we need a united and independent foreign policy, so could face all challenges bravely on international level.
