Tel Aviv anti-war protests spark arrests amid war against Iran

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM: Hundreds of Israeli demonstrators took to the streets of Tel Aviv’s Habima Square over the weekend, voicing fierce opposition to Israel’s ongoing war with Iran, only to face swift police crackdowns and arrests.

The current series of protests began on March 27, when police dispersed crowds chanting “No more war” and “Stop the genocide,” arresting 13 in Tel Aviv for disorderly conduct and five more in Haifa amid a nationwide ban on gatherings.

Videos aired by Israeli as well as international media showed officers breaking up protests that turned violent, with earlier March rallies seeing 1-3 detentions each time.

The war erupted in late February 2026 with Israeli strikes on Iranian targets, sparking drone and missile exchanges, U.S. involvement, and attacks on sites like South Pars energy fields. Now in its fifth week, it has claimed over 2,000 lives, drawn in Hezbollah and Houthis, and split public opinion despite majority support in polls.

Latest reports from the region suggest protests persist weekly despite restrictions, fueled by war fatigue and multi-front threats, as Israeli forces continue strikes on Iranian nuclear and industrial sites with no ceasefire in sight. Authorities vow to enforce gathering bans rigorously.
