Swedish prosecutors announced the closure of a rape and sexual assault investigation on Thursday, citing insufficient evidence in the case that was reportedly linked to French soccer star Kylian Mbappé. Mbappé has denied involvement in the alleged incidents, which were said to have occurred at a hotel in central Stockholm on October 10.
Although the prosecution did not disclose the individual’s identity, Swedish media outlets, including SVT, Expressen, and Aftonbladet, had previously speculated that the suspect was Mbappé. His representatives swiftly denied the accusations, calling them “completely false” and “a slanderous rumor.”
In a statement, Senior Prosecutor Marina Chirakova explained that while a suspect had been identified in the case, the evidence gathered was insufficient to proceed with charges, leading to the investigation’s closure.
The investigation had raised significant media attention, with Mbappé’s club, Real Madrid, choosing not to comment after the announcement. Neither Mbappé’s legal team nor his PR representatives responded immediately to requests for comment.
Prosecutor Chirakova further clarified that the individual under suspicion had not been formally notified of their status in the case.
