ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has nominated Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) stalwart Nehal Hashmi as the new governor of Sindh, confirming weeks of speculation over a possible change in the province’s top constitutional office.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Mr Sharif met Hashmi at the PM House on Tuesday before finalizing the decision. The meeting was also attended by Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar.
The premier has forwarded a summary to President Asif Ali Zardari for approval.
Hashmi, a senior PML-N figure, previously served as senator from March 2015 to March 2021, as per the Senate’s official record.
The development comes amid persistent rumors about the removal of incumbent Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement–Pakistan (MQM-P). Reports of his possible ouster had circulated on social media in recent days, though MQM-P leadership had dismissed such speculation in December, insisting Tessori would continue in office.
If approved, Hashmi’s appointment would mark a significant political shift in Sindh, where the MQM-P has held the governor’s post since Tessori’s elevation in 2022.
