The 2026 T20 World Cup has been plunged into a geopolitical standoff as former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly lashed out at Pakistan’s decision to boycott their marquee clash against India.
Speaking on February 8, 2026, Ganguly questioned the logic of the move, warning that the “Green Shirts” are risking tournament elimination for a protest that makes little logistical sense.
“You come to a World Cup to win it, and every point is important,” Ganguly told reporters. “Backing out for what? They are already playing in Sri Lanka anyway. I am surprised… you cannot afford to lose points like this.”
‘Apologize and Pay’: Pakistan’s demands ICC over Bangladesh World Cup snub
The controversy began when the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), acting on a federal government directive, announced it would forfeit the February 15 fixture at the R. Premadasa Stadium.
The move is a gesture of solidarity with Bangladesh, who were removed from the tournament after the ICC rejected their request to move matches out of India due to security concerns.
The decision has left Pakistan in a precarious position in Group A. By forfeiting the match, India will be awarded two points automatically, while Pakistan’s path to the Super 8s now leaves zero margin for error in their remaining games against the USA and Namibia.
PCB’s Three Demands for a Resolution
Despite the firm stance, reports suggest the PCB is looking for an “exit ramp” to avoid severe ICC sanctions and financial ruin.
Following a high-level meeting in Lahore on February 8 involving ICC and BCB officials, the PCB has reportedly placed three conditions on the table to break the deadlock:
Significant monetary reparations for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for their loss of tournament revenue.
Payment of full tournament participation fees to Bangladesh despite their absence.
