Sindh CM orders heat‑wave camps as Karachi braces for soaring temperatures

KARACHI: The heat-wave gripping the metropolis is set to intensify from today, with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasting that temperatures could touch 41°C on Monday, officials said.

The mercury reached 39°C in the city of Quaid‑e‑Azam on Saturday, and the PMD warned of continued hot, dry conditions across Sindh over the next 48–72 hours. Humid spells at times are likely to push the apparent — or “feels‑like” — temperature higher during afternoon hours, the department added.

Karachi heat wave: Worst is yet to come

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has directed district administrations in Karachi to open heat‑wave relief camps to protect vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children and outdoor workers. The camps, officials said, will be equipped to offer drinking water, shaded resting areas and first‑aid for heat‑related illnesses, while hospitals have been asked to enhance readiness for treating heatstroke and dehydration.

District officials confirmed that multiple camps have already been established across the city and that municipal teams are coordinating with health and disaster‑management departments to ensure supplies and staffing. Local authorities also urged employers to adjust outdoor work schedules during the peak afternoon heat.

The PMD urged residents to take precautions: avoid prolonged sun exposure between 11am and 4pm, drink plenty of fluids, wear light clothing and head cover, and seek immediate medical attention for symptoms such as dizziness, nausea or loss of consciousness.

Authorities warned that gusty winds and dust storms may accompany the heat in some interior areas, exacerbating health and safety risks. City administrations said they will issue further advisories if conditions deteriorate.
