Uzbekistan is scheduled to hold the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit on September 15 and 16. Pakistan, India, Russia, China, and Turkey, among other member countries, will participate in the summit.
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif is expected to attend the summit along with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, Chinese and Russian heads of state.
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are also members of Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which is known for its cooperation in political, economic and military fields.
Pakistan has high hopes for this year’s SCO summit as it has decided to sign agreements in agriculture cooperation with member countries. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will sign the agreements during his Uzbekistan tour. These agreements are considered to be an important development in the agricultural sector. Federal cabinet already approved the said agreements on Monday.
Considering the importance of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, after Pakistan and India inclusion, this organization now represents almost half of the global population.
Roughly, Shanghai Cooperation Organization encompasses 77% of Asia, the largest continent in the world, while its member countries such as Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan hold vast oil and gas reserves.
Since the interests of Shanghai Cooperation Organization member countries are closely connected to each other, the organization relies on mutual cooperation as the history of the organization attests to this fact.
The chief purpose of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is to develop bilateral cooperation in various fields. Pakistan can utilize this forum by attracting investments to develop its industry and agriculture sectors. The proposed agreements in the agriculture field are a positive step in this direction.
