Global pop star Shakira found herself at the centre of an unexpected social media debate after performing at the opening ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico City.
The Colombian singer took the stage at the iconic Estadio Azteca alongside Nigerian artist Burna Boy to perform the tournament’s official anthem, “Dai Dai”, in a performance watched by millions around the world.
However, shortly after the ceremony, attention shifted away from the music as rumours began circulating online claiming that a body double had appeared on stage in place of Shakira.
The speculation spread rapidly across social media platforms including X, TikTok and Instagram, with some users arguing that the singer looked different from her usual appearance. Many pointed to her hairstyle, sunglasses and stage outfit as reasons for their suspicions.
Despite the viral claims, there is no evidence to support the theory.
Several media outlets and journalists who reviewed footage from the event noted that distinctive features visible during the performance matched Shakira’s appearance. Among them was a small scar on her forehead, which many cited as clear proof that the performer was indeed the singer herself.
According to reports, sources close to Shakira also dismissed the rumours, describing the body-double claims as baseless and without any factual foundation.
