RAWALPINDI/ISLAMABAD: As a powerful Western Disturbance moves into the region, authorities and meteorologists are issuing urgent directives to residents of Rawalpindi and Islamabad to prepare for heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds expected through April 8.
With rainfall totals projected at 80–150 mm — far above seasonal norms — and temperatures set to drop by 5–7°C, met experts are urging immediate action.
Key Precautionary Measures for Residents:
1. Stay Indoors During Peak Storms
Avoid unnecessary travel, especially between 2 PM and 8 PM, when thunderstorms and hail are most likely. If outdoors, seek shelter immediately — do not wait for rain to begin.
2. Secure Property & Infrastructure
– Anchor loose outdoor items (awnings, signage, garden furniture)
– Trim overhanging branches near homes and power lines
– Reinforce roofs and windows if vulnerable to wind or hail damage
3. Prepare for Urban Flooding
– Clear drains and gutters around homes and businesses
– Keep sandbags ready for ground-floor entrances
– Avoid parking vehicles in low-lying or flood-prone areas
4. Farmers: Protect Crops & Livestock
Harvest wheat if possible; otherwise, cover fields with tarps. Move livestock to elevated, sheltered areas. Hail can cause irreversible crop damage — act now.
5. Travel & Commute Alerts
– Avoid Murree Road, Galliyan, and other hill routes due to landslide risk
– Expect traffic delays; allow extra time if travel is unavoidable
– Public transport may be disrupted — check updates via local radio or PMD social media
6. Emergency Readiness
– Keep mobile phones charged and emergency numbers handy (1122, 15)
– Stock essentials: water, non-perishable food, flashlights, first aid kits
– Power outages likely — prepare backup lighting and charging solutions
After the Storm:
Rainfall is expected to ease significantly after April 8 — a welcome relief for agriculture — but recovery efforts may take days. Avoid flooded roads and report downed power lines or blocked drains to local authorities.
