ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) has taken notice of the arrest of a private company’s CEO, Saif-ur-Rehman, from its premise and sought a clarification from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
Earlier today (Monday), The accountability bureau had arrested Saif-ur-Rehman in the Mudaraba fraud case after the Islamabad High Court had rejected his bail plea.
Advocate Latif Khosa appeared in court on behalf of Saif-ur-Rehman and said that his client had gone to the SC for pre-arrest bail. “The NAB vehicle hit my assistant lawyer’s vehicle and the NAB officials arrested my client from the court’s premises,” Khosa said.
Acting Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial and sought clarification from the NAB on the arrest. The apex court has also given an order to produce Saif-ur-Rehman Khan in court.
The acting Chief Justice, in his remarks, asked the NAB to explain why the arrest was made on court premises. “Rule of law is more important than recovery. You cannot ensure recovery with terror,” said acting CJP, adding that NAB must not terrorise the citizens of the country.
Justice Muneeb Akhtar reprimanded the NAB officials and suggested registering an FIR against those involved in the arrest. “NAB officials should be handcuffed and sent from here,” he added.
The SC also ordered the NAB officials involved in the arrest of the accused to submit surety bonds of Rs0.1 million each. The apex court further ordered to present the CCTV footage to identify the NAB officials involved in the incident during the next hearing and summoned DG NAB Rawalpindi and DG HR NAB Rawalpindi on September 1.
