With around 20 days remaining until Eid-ul-Adha, Karachiites have begun purchasing sacrificial animals in increasing numbers. A noticeable rush of buyers was observed across various cattle markets on Sunday, and footfall is expected to rise further during the evening hours.
Many buyers believe that the number of animals is lower this year, resulting in higher prices. Fearing a possible shortage and further price hikes as Eid approaches, people are opting to buy early to avoid last-minute hassle.
According to media reports, the Northern Bypass cattle market — known as Asia’s largest — is becoming more vibrant with activity. The market’s administrator stated that the number of sacrificial animals has already surpassed 55,000.
Spread over 1,200 acres, the Northern Bypass market is showcasing rare and attractive cows, bulls, goats, and artistically decorated camels, drawing significant attention from visitors.
Separate blocks have been designated for different types of livestock, and for the first time, a food street with branded franchises has been introduced for visitors’ convenience.
Livestock camps have been operational in various blocks since day one. A pass system is in place for vehicles entering the market: motorcycle passes are priced at Rs. 1,500 for the month (half the price of car passes), while larger vehicles are charged Rs. 3,200. One-day entry passes are also available.
Administrator of the market, Faisal Ali, confirmed that 24-hour facilities for fodder, water, and electricity are available, with each animal receiving up to 30 liters of water free of charge daily.
For security, around 1,000 police personnel have been deployed in and around the market. According to spokesperson Umm Ayman, families are visiting the market in a safe and festive environment, with activity continuing late into the night.
