Rice exporters say Punjab floods likely to affect 12% of rice crop

The Pakistan Rice Exporters Association (REAP) has said that only 10 to 12 percent of Punjab’s rice crop is likely to be affected by the recent flooding, dismissing claims of widespread devastation as exaggerated.

REAP’s Senior Vice Chairman, Javed Jelani, said that according to the association’s estimates, a maximum of 600,000 to 700,000 acres of agricultural land in Punjab has been impacted by the floods. He emphasized that this would affect no more than 10 to 12 percent of the province’s total rice crop. These figures, he noted, are based on both official and independent surveys, and the association strongly rejects claims suggesting losses of up to 60 percent.

While acknowledging that the floods have caused damage in certain areas, Jelani also pointed out that the excess water could be beneficial for regions previously facing water shortages, potentially leading to improved per-acre yields.

Discussing the international market, he warned that India is currently selling rice at lower prices, and the spread of inaccurate or overly negative reports about Pakistan’s crop could alarm foreign buyers.

The REAP Senior Vice Chairman stressed that such misinformation may raise doubts about whether Pakistani exporters can fulfill their commitments. Therefore, he underlined the importance of sharing only accurate and verified information.

He further noted that water levels in Punjab are already receding, and expressed hope that Sindh will also manage the floodwaters safely.

Regarding relief efforts, Jelani said that REAP members stand in solidarity with affected families and farmers, and will provide assistance and support wherever needed.
