Ramazan like never before

The advent of the holy month Ramazan is upon us but this year Muslims around the world will observe the month of fasting like never before as the world grapples with the coronavirus pandemic.

The month of Ramazan brings us closer to our community and family as we dedicate ourselves to prayers, charity and good deeds. It is also when businesses thrive as people make Eid preparations. However, this year things will be a lot different as lockdown is still enforced and the risk of coronavirus remains. The atmosphere of excitement as we welcome the month has also changed.

The government has allowed Tarawih and daily prayers during Ramazan based on certain conditions including safety measures and social distancing rules. Iftar and Sehri gatherings, which are common in mosques, have been disallowed. Many people look toward these gatherings to break their fasts. While the government has reached an agreement with religious scholars, it can be reconsidered in case the rules are flouted or there is a spike in coronavirus cases.

Around the world, the coronavirus has generated new levels of anxiety as people are faced with the paradox to practice separation at a time of socializing. Many countries including Saudi Arabia and UAE have closed mosques and stopped prayers during Ramazan, instructing people to pray at home.

The hustle and bustle which is usually seen in Ramazan is unlikely to be seen this year. There is a curfew-like situation at night and it is uncertain when markets and shopping centres would reopen. There has been a partial easing of the lockdown and traders have threatened to reopen business. Restaurant owners and eateries, which see a boom in business, are worried about how to operate during Ramazan.

The pandemic has already been disastrous for business. Smaller traders such as those on pushcarts will be the worst affected. The festivities and even the delicacies in Ramazan will also not be the same. Some are worried about giving Zakat while the poor are concerned about receiving it. With restrictions on travel, people who throng to their hometowns will be unable to spend Eid with their loved ones.

Ramazan is the month of blessings and forgiveness when socializing is sacred. The mood this year has been a lot different as around 1.8 billion Muslims are facing a Ramazan like never before. We hope and pray passes by with ease and we are to fulfill our religious and social obligations.
