Google began a gradual rollout of a long-requested feature that allows users to change their @gmail.com email address while keeping their existing account and data intact.
All existing emails, photos, Drive files, and purchases remain in the account. Your original Gmail address will automatically become an email alias.
You will continue to receive emails sent to the old address. You can still use the old address to sign in to Google services.
Your old address remains yours and cannot be claimed by any other user.
Limitations and Rules
Once you change your address, you must wait 12 months before you can change it again.
Each account is limited to a total of three changes (allowing for four unique addresses over the account’s lifetime).
This feature only applies to personal accounts ending in @gmail.com; it is not available for custom domains or Workspace (work/school) accounts.
How to Check Availability
The feature is rolling out in phases and may not be available to all users immediately. You can check if your account is eligible by visiting Google Account Settings:
Navigate to Personal Info.
Select Email.
Look for the Google Account email. If the option to edit is present, you can change your address.
Security Warning
Be cautious of phishing attempts. Google will only offer this feature through official account settings. Do not click on external links claiming to “update” your email address.
