The Punjab government, taking notice of rising chicken prices, has directed poultry hatcheries to submit three months’ pricing records.
Punjab has witnessed a staggering 250 percent increase in the price of day-old chicks, with rates rising from Rs 50-60 to Rs 220 within three months.
This sharp price hike has significantly impacted the cost of chicken, which has surged from Rs 450 per kg to as high as Rs 900 per kg.
The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has taken notice of the alleged collusion by poultry hatcheries and directed them to submit three months’ pricing records.
Numerous complaints suggested that price increases were a result of anti-competitive practices by hatcheries.
To stabilise chicken prices, the Punjab government has decided to impose restrictions on the export of chicks to ensure sufficient supply in local markets and curb rising prices.
Market sources have indicated that chicken price hikes are becoming an annual issue, with a recent increase of Rs 200 per kg observed.
However, due to government actions, the price of chicken has seen a minor reduction, dropping by Rs 50 per kg to Rs 850.
