ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Azam Nazir Tarar and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Barrister Ali Zafar have won the technocrat seats unopposed in the Senate.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has completed the scrutiny of nomination papers of candidates for Senate elections. A total 170 nomination papers were filed by the candidates for 48 seats of the Senate. The ECP has rejected the nomination papers of 29 candidates after which the number of candidates for Senate elections was reduced to 141.
The ECP accepted the nomination papers of 77 candidates for general seats, 34 nomination papers for seats reserved for women, 20 for technocrat seats and 10 nomination papers for minority seats. The ECP accepted 40 nomination papers from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 35 from Balochistan, 35 from Sindh, 22 from Punjab and nine from Islamabad.
The candidates can file appeals against acceptance or rejection of nomination papers on February 20 and the last date for disposing of these appeals is February 23. The revised list of candidates will be published on February 24.
The candidates can withdraw their nomination papers on February 25. The polling on 48 seats will be held on March 3 at the Parliament House in Islamabad and the four provincial assemblies.
The ECP accepted the nomination papers of former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani of the PPP and Federal Minister Faisal Vawda of the PTI for the upcoming Senate elections . The commission rejected those submitted by senior PML-N leader Pervaiz Rashid and PTI’s Neelam Irshad on the final day of the scrutiny process.
