Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shoaib Shaheen has made it clear that his party doesn’t object to Justice Yahya Afridi’s appointment as Chief Justice of Pakistan. In fact, Shaheen expressed respect for Justice Afridi as a judge and individual.
However, he strongly criticized the process behind the appointment, specifically the constitutional amendments that led to it.
Shaheen’s concern lies in the principle of bypassing seniority in the selection process, which he believes could lead to lobbying and favoritism among judges. He also condemned the 26th Constitutional Amendment, stating that it has disrupted the entire justice system.
On the other hand, Pakistan Muslim League (N) leader Barrister Aqeel Malik defended the selection process, saying that the committee evaluated all three candidates based on merit and considered them strong choices. Malik denied any personal issues with the judges.
It’s worth noting that Shoaib Shaheen is a PTI candidate for the ICT-II constituency, running with the election symbol “DOVE” . His statements reflect the PTI’s stance on the matter, emphasizing the importance of transparency and fairness in the judicial appointment process.
