Pakistan’s Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has discovered new gas reserves in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, capable of producing 2.14 million cubic feet of gas per day (MCFD), the state broadcaster reported on Thursday.
“This significant discovery was made under the natural resource exploration projects of the Special Investment Facilitation Council,” Radio Pakistan reported. “The reserves have the capacity to produce up to 2.14 MCFD, contributing to Pakistan’s energy self-sufficiency and promoting further exploration in the mining sector.”
Pakistan has long relied on oil and gas imports but has faced growing energy challenges, including gas shortages, due to declining domestic supplies and difficulties in securing expensive gas on the international spot market.
In October, the OGDCL signed an agreement with the China Central Depository and Clearing Company to develop the country’s tight gas potential. Tight gas, an unconventional resource requiring advanced extraction techniques, is typically found in low-permeability reservoir rocks such as sandstone.
