ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has called a meeting of the parliamentary board today which is expected to finalise the Pakistan Tehreeke-e-Insaf (PTI) candidates for Senate elections.
The parliamentary board will hold consultations on the Senate election and decided on the candidates for the elections. Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar and Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will also attend the meeting.
Chief Minister Punjab will brief the parliamentary board about the preparation for the polls in the Senate elections and will apprise about the numbers game.
Governor Sindh Imran Ismail is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Imran Khan as the decisions on Senate candidates from the province are expected to be taken during the meeting.
The governor has arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday from Karachi and would meet the prime minister today to finalise the names from Sindh. During the meeting, they are expected to discuss the names of possible Senate candidates of the party from the province and a final decision is likely to be made in the meeting.
Governor Imran Ismail would also brief the prime minister on the meetings with coalition partners in the provincial assembly and possible collaboration in the upcoming Senate election.
The federal government and its coalition partners have 65 members in Sindh Assembly. PTI leads with 30 lawmakers, followed by MQM-P with 21 seats and GDA with 14 seats. The ruling PPP has 97 members in the assembly.
The Election Commission of Pakistan has already started preparations for the Senate election due to be held in March this year. The commission has notified the appointment of Returning Officers and Polling Officers for the Senate election a day back.
The electoral body has issued a notification for the appointment of the electoral staff for the upcoming elections of the upper house. Provincial election commissioner Ijaz Anwar Chauhan has been appointed as returning officer for Senate elections in Sindh.
