Internet users across Pakistan are experiencing widespread disruption after a technical fault developed in a major international submarine internet cable.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has confirmed that a fault in the SEA-ME-WE 5 (SMW5) international submarine cable has significantly affected internet services across the country.
As a result of the outage, users in various parts of Pakistan have reported substantially slower internet speeds as well as intermittent connectivity issues.
According to PTA officials, the Trans World Associates (TWA) team and the SMW5 consortium are actively investigating the undersea cable fault to determine its cause and restore normal operations as quickly as possible.
The authority said emergency measures had been implemented to prevent a nationwide internet blackout. Internet traffic has been rerouted through alternative international links to ensure users remain connected while repair work is under way.
The regulator also assured the public that it is working closely with all relevant organisations and stakeholders to restore internet services to normal at the earliest opportunity.
According to the PTA, further updates, including the estimated time for the repair and full restoration of the submarine cable, will be shared with the public as soon as confirmed information becomes available.
