ISLAMABAD: The National Institute of Health has said that poliovirus has been found in the sewage of 5 major cities of Pakistan.
According to a technical report of polio-positive sewage samples compiled by NIH, the virus was found in 9 sewage samples from five cities of Pakistan, including Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, Chaman, and Mastung.
The samples were taken from February 21 to 27 and tested positive for wild poliovirus.
Sources have said with reference to the NIH report that the polio virus was found in the sewage of Karachi South and Korangi. In Peshawar, the virus was found in the sewage of Shaheen Muslim Town, while the virus was found in the sewage of Quetta.
It should be noted that two cases of poliovirus have been reported in Pakistan so far this year.
On March 16, sources said that Pakistan had decided to start a three-day anti-polio campaign. The virus was found in the sewage of major cities in Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan.
