KARACHI: Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has expressed dissatisfaction over the existing lockdown across the country and warned the federal government against easing the coronavirus lockdown.
Addressing a press conference today (Saturday), President of PMA Central Dr. Ikram Tunio said that the Centre has decided to ease the lockdown, however, PMA was in favour of strict lockdown, and a public awareness campaign for the containment of the disease.
The President said, “A better lockdown should be imposed,” adding that currently, there were only 63 beds allocated for coronavirus patients in Karachi’s five government hospitals.
“As you know very well, Karachi is Pakistan’s largest city and the infection will spread if the lockdown situation remains the same,” he warned. He also warned that other cities were also at risk of the deadly disease started spreading in Karachi.
Commenting on the current lockdown, he said, “This isn’t a lockdown as one can witness a large number of people outside NADRA offices and vegetable markets.”
In this regard, he advised the government to implement the safety measures of the World Health Organization (WHO) in order to contain the outbreak of the coronavirus.
Dr. Ikram Tunio said that in the past couple of weeks, not a single person had died from hunger. He also urged the people of Pakistan to practice social distancing and follow safety precautions.
