The Pakistan Sugar Mills Association has written a letter to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for National Food Security, demanding immediate permission to export surplus sugar available in the country.
The letter says that as of July 15, 2026, Pakistan had sugar stocks of 3.4 million metric tons, while the country’s average monthly sugar consumption stands at 567,000 metric tons.
According to the association, a major stock of 1.158 million metric tons of sugar will still be available at the start of the upcoming crushing season. It added that a bumper sugarcane crop is expected in the next season, which could result in the production of around 8 million metric tons of surplus sugar beyond the country’s requirements.
The association argued that the sugarcane sowing season is approaching in September, but farmers are facing uncertainty and concerns over the next crop due to the lack of sugar exports.
The Pakistan Sugar Mills Association has urged the government to immediately allow the export of 585,000 tons of surplus sugar. It also requested permission to export sugar allocated for strategic reserves within one month of the start of the new crushing season.
