Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has announced what he described as a historic breakthrough in the fisheries sector, saying that Pakistani fish and seafood exports have now gained access to the Russian market for the first time.
He said 16 Pakistani companies have been granted permission to export seafood to Russia.
According to the minister, access to the Russian market is expected to pave the way for entry into other countries of the Eurasian Economic Union, further expanding Pakistan’s seafood sector.
He added that the Marine Fisheries Department ensures compliance with international standards for seafood exports, which is essential for global competitiveness.
He said Pakistan’s annual seafood exports could exceed $500 million, while entry into the Russian market could push this figure to around $800 million.
He further stated that initial exports to Russia are expected to generate approximately $300 million in revenue, describing it as a positive development for the national economy.
Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said seafood exports will be transported via sea, air, and land routes, noting that land corridors through Central Asian states are a cost-effective trade option. He highlighted strong demand for Pakistani fish in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, which could further increase export opportunities.
He also said Pakistan’s ports are playing a key role in regional trade, adding that Pakistan’s warm-water seafood products hold a competitive advantage in global markets. The minister expressed confidence that improved infrastructure and compliance with international standards would significantly boost seafood exports.
