Pakistan on Wednesday summoned the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires in Islamabad and lodged a strong demarche over remarks by U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor regarding Jammu and Kashmir during his visit to the region.
The move came after Gor visited Srinagar and described Jammu and Kashmir as an “important part of India.”
Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected the remarks, maintaining that Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally disputed territory whose final status remains unresolved.
Islamabad reiterated its position that the dispute should be resolved in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Pakistan has consistently maintained that the Kashmir dispute requires a peaceful and just settlement based on the right to self-determination.
The Foreign Office’s protest also covered Gor’s visit to Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, which marked his first trip to the territory since assuming office as U.S. ambassador to India.
The diplomatic development comes amid renewed attention to the Kashmir dispute, with Pakistan continuing to raise the issue at international forums and call for implementation of relevant UN resolutions.
