Pakistan made a strong start to their campaign at the ITF Masters World Team Championship, defeating the United States 3-0 in their opening match.
The global event for men aged over 45 is being held in Lisbon, Portugal, with more than 300 players from 30 countries participating. Pakistan is being represented by experienced and internationally recognized players.
Pakistan Tennis Federation President Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi gave the team the lead in the opening singles match, defeating Wojciech Bratek 6-2, 6-3.
In the second singles match, Aqeel Khan secured Pakistan’s overall victory after a thrilling contest against American opponent John Chisworth. Khan won 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 to seal the team’s triumph.
In the doubles match, Shehryar Salamat and Hadi Hussain completed a clean sweep for Pakistan with a remarkable comeback victory. After losing the opening set, they defeated Jeroen Vest and Guillermo Cosen 1-6, 6-1, 10-6 in the deciding tie-break to confirm Pakistan’s 3-0 win.
With this victory over the United States, Pakistan has made a strong start in the round-robin stage. The national team will next face Canada, with the winner securing qualification for the knockout stage.
