In a move set to benefit millions of users worldwide, OpenAI has announced a major expansion of ChatGPT’s free offering by removing limits on text-based conversations for Free and Go users, significantly broadening access to its artificial intelligence platform.
According to the company, Free and Go users will begin receiving unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna starting next week, eliminating the message caps that previously restricted prolonged conversations.
While text interactions will become unlimited, usage limits will continue to apply to file uploads, image generation and certain advanced tools.
OpenAI also announced that GPT-5.6 Luna will become the default AI model for Free and Go users, replacing the previous default experience with a more capable and responsive system. The rollout is expected to begin this week before unlimited text chats are enabled.
As part of the update, free users will gain access to a new “Think” button, allowing ChatGPT to spend more time reasoning through difficult or complex questions.
The feature is designed to deliver stronger analytical responses while remaining subject to safeguards against misuse.
The announcement also includes enhancements for paid subscribers.
Plus and Pro users will receive an upgraded version of GPT-5.6 Sol, which OpenAI says offers greater factual accuracy, more concise responses and improved handling of questions involving dates, figures, rules and cited sources. Subscribers will additionally be able to control how deeply ChatGPT reasons before answering through a new “thought” slider.
It is pertinent to mention here that the latest upgrades come as competition in the generative AI sector intensifies, with leading technology companies racing to make increasingly capable AI assistants more accessible.
By lifting text chat limits for free users while refining premium features, OpenAI is aiming to extend advanced AI capabilities to a broader global audience without compromising performance for paying subscribers.
