The highly anticipated Season 2 of “Squid Game” is scheduled to premiere later this year.
Netflix made the announcement in a shareholder letter on Tuesday, revealing its ambitious 2024 lineup. The streaming platform highlighted the return of popular series such as “The Diplomat” S2, “Bridgerton” S3, “Squid Game” S2, and “Empress” S2. Additionally, it mentioned unscripted series like “Tour de France: Unchained” S2, “Love is Blind” S6, “F1: Drive to Survive” S6, and “Full Swing” S2. New shows include “3 Body Problem,” based on the best-selling novel from the creators of “Game of Thrones,” “Griselda” starring Sofia Vergara, “The Gentlemen” from Guy Ritchie, “Eric” starring Benedict Cumberbatch, “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” and “Cien Años de Soledad” from Colombia, based on Gabriel García Márquez’s novel, as well as “Senna” from Brazil.
Netflix executives also confirmed the launch of “Emily in Paris” Season 4 later this year. The first season of “Squid Game,” consisting of nine episodes, premiered in 2021 and became a massive success, garnering 14 Emmy nominations and winning six, including Best Drama Series – a historic achievement for a non-English-language series.
The show continued to make history at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards with nominations for cast, actor, actress, and stunt ensemble, with Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon winning awards. “Squid Game” also received three Golden Globe Awards, including Best TV Drama.
Amid speculation about a second season, Netflix officially confirmed it in January 2022. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos expressed enthusiasm, stating, “Absolutely. The ‘Squid Game’ universe has just begun.” Since then, the “Squid Game” universe has expanded to include an unscripted competition series, “Squid Game: The Challenge,” and an upcoming video game.
Netflix’s Q4 2023 earnings were reported on Tuesday, coinciding with the announcement of a significant deal to broadcast WWE’s “Monday Night Raw” starting in 2025.
