Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide weather alert warning of heavy rainfall, flash flooding and landslides from today until 10 July, as the second spell of the monsoon season combines with a western weather system.
According to the NDMA, intense rainfall is expected across northern parts of the country, increasing the risk of rising water levels in mountain streams, seasonal waterways and several major rivers.
The authority warned that flooding could affect the Indus River and a number of tributaries and streams, including Yasin, Ghizer, Kilik, Mintaka, Darel, Lotkho, Daral, Palas, Alahai Khwar, Bara River, Gomal and Tank Zam, as well as other local watercourses.
The NDMA also cautioned that heavy downpours could trigger urban flooding in low-lying and densely populated areas. Local authorities have been advised to remain on high alert, while residents are urged to take precautionary measures and stay informed about the latest weather updates.
Meanwhile, the authority has warned of a heightened risk of landslides in the mountainous regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, advising the public to avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable areas.
Separately, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast hotter conditions in Karachi after a temporary suspension of sea breezes. Temperatures in the city are expected to reach 37°C, with high humidity likely to make conditions feel significantly warmer.
