ISLAMABAD: National Voters’ Day is being observed today for the strengthening of democracy across Pakistan with the aim of raising awareness about democratic traditions.
The National Voters’ Day is being celebrated in commemoration of the first general elections of Pakistan held on 7th December 1970. The day aims to create awareness among the general public about the importance of vote and the inclusion of all segments of society in the electoral process.
The history of the day states that military rule and martial law prevailed in the country for more or less 35 years, during which human rights, especially the right to vote and freedom of expression, were affected.
The main event in this regard will be held in Islamabad where Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja will address a ceremony. Ceremonies will also be held at Provincial Offices of the Election Commission in connection with the day.
