NAB gears up for action against coordinators of KMC officers

KARACHI: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is gearing up to take action against coordinators and assistants of Karachi Municipal Authority (KMC) officers for corruption, embezzlement and misuse of funds since the last four years.
Investigations are already underway against Mayor Karachi’s assistant Rehan Ali, and now similar actions are being planned against the coordinators of district administration. Sources informed that action will be taken after elected chairmen and vice-chairmen in the next phase.
It has been revealed that these unofficial and unelected coordinators, who are linked with higher officials, have caused huge losses to the national exchequer. Anti-graft authorities will investigate their assets and those of their relatives.
Sources revealed that many officers have complained to higher-ups of being pressurized into illegal activities. They have also alleged that coordinators yield more influence than elected officials.
The coordinators of various departments including anti-encroachment, local taxes, road cutting, drainage cleaning and parks have been involved in massive corruption, while the KMC remained defunct.
These coordinators were responsible for looking after road cutting matters since the past three years and embezzled million while receiving small amounts in fees. These were responsible for massive losses in at least six districts while the KMC was unable to collect the allotted local taxes.
The Sindh government has also failed to take action against these coordinators for interference in official matters.  However, sources revealed that action against them is expected in the next few days. They are likely to be arrested and investigation will be launched against them.
